According to its mandate, the Truth and Reconciliation Commission may:

  • Interview those whom it considers convenient, including authorities and public officials and collecting the information it deems relevant.
  • Access State information or documentation, requesting cooperation from relevant public officials.
  • Visit or inspect places it deems convenient. To perform its duties it will be supported by experts when necessary.
  • Develop public hearings and reserved procedures when it considers it necessary. For the security of those who provide important information, their identity may be kept under reserve.
  • Request security measures for those who, according to its discernment, require them.
  • Establish appropriate communication channels and promote participation of the population, particularly of that most affected by political violence.
