Truth and Reconciliation Commission
AND PROSECUTOR’S OFFICE TO ACT TOGETHER
IN EXHUMATIONS The
chairman of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission, Dr. Salomón
Lerner Febres and the Prosecutor, Dr. Nelly Calderón,
signed this afternoon an institutional cooperation agreement.
Through
this agreement, the Prosecutor’s Office commits
itself to channel its cooperation through the Special Prosecutor’s
Office for Forced Disappearances, in order to provide information
in relation to the cases being investigated by the Commission
and to formalize the agreement with the Truth Commission on
its intervention during the process of exhumation of clandestine
graves.
The Truth and Reconciliation Commission and the Prosecutor’s
Office share a mutual interest in clearing up these crimes
and violations of human rights committed by terrorist organizations
and State agents.
It is important to point out that the regulations
establishing and governing the functions of the Truth and Reconciliation
Commission and the Prosecutor’s Office are different
in their motivations, and in that sense the compliance with
their functions does not imply any interference in the work
developed by the other institution… the Peruvian government
will provide its full support to the work developed by the
Truth and Reconciliation Commission through its different organisms
and ministries
